SERVICES FOR WOMEN DEALING WITH ISSUES OF AGING

Dr. Beth Firestein is a licensed Ph.D. psychologist in private practice in Loveland, Colorado. She has 36 years of experience in counseling individuals, couples, and families. The focus of Dr. Firestein’s practice has changed. She is no longer providing individual, couple, or family psychotherapy services. The new focus of her practice assists women with issues of aging through her Wise Women Support and Discussion Group. She also assists other potential Wise Women Group leaders in successfully developing Wise Women Groups in their own communities.

Dr. Firestein’s approach to her work focuses on looking at the needs of the “whole person” in their life context with the goal of helping each woman overcome difficulties and achieve optimal wellness. Based in Loveland, Colorado, her Wise Women Group serves the diverse populations of Northern Colorado, including residents of Loveland, Fort Collins, Greeley, Berthoud, Longmont, Boulder, and Estes Park.

Women Sharing Wisdom: A Facilitator’s Manual

Women Sharing Wisdom: A Facilitator’s Manual provides a step-by-step guide for starting and facilitating a Wise Women Support and Discussion Group in your own community. This book provides a brief history of the origins and establishment of the Wise Women Group, guidance for determining the need in your community, specific steps for establishing a group, and ways to address common challenges associated with leading this type of group. The remainder of the book consists of 158 original discussion pieces written by Dr. Firestein and used in her group since its inception. The discussion stimulus pieces, called Food for Thought, span a wide variety of topics of interest and relevance to women and aging. Experience the rewards of helping older women in your community find their way to the wisdom needed to navigate the aging journey with dignity and grace. Facilitators of these groups find that their own fountain of wisdom grows as well.

The Wise Women Group is a free, community-based support group for women 50 − 100+ who are looking for a place to connect with other women and have stimulating discussions about a variety of topics that pertain to our lives. Most of the women in the group are in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. This is a group of vital, interesting women dealing with challenges and changes associated with getting older. The tone of the group is positive and uplifting and we manage to laugh together in spite of the challenges we all face.
